First, get the car somewhere safe
A car that's run out of fuel will slow down before it fully stops - use that momentum to coast onto the shoulder or the side of the road rather than stopping in a live lane. Hazard lights on, and stay out of the car if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
Why walking to the nearest pump isn't the best option
Walking along a road shoulder carrying a fuel can, especially at night or on a motorway, puts you at more risk than the empty tank does. It also leaves the vehicle - and anyone still in it - unattended on the roadside.
Requesting emergency fuel delivery means you stay with the vehicle while enough fuel to reach a proper station is brought directly to you.
Avoiding a repeat
Fuel gauges in older vehicles can read optimistically in the last quarter of the tank, and running consistently low shortens fuel pump life in some cars. Treating a quarter tank as the point to refuel, rather than the warning light, avoids most of this entirely.
